Is “Fight or Flight” Sabotaging your Leadership Skills?

Aug 16, 2024

Have you noticed a lot of buzz lately about mental health, trauma, and talk of the nervous system?  There is a good reason for it and as a high-level leader, coach or mentor, you need to pay attention.

Leadership skills are crucial for your success as a leader

As a leader, you are an agent of cultivating lasting change in others.  You literally “lead the way” to bigger and better ways of doing things and help others to implement change.

When it comes to mental health, trauma and the nervous system - they all impact people’s ability to create lasting change (or not). This is the difference between a client or a team member that meets their goals, or fails before they’ve tried.

Overworking is NOT on the list of leadership skills

Something that few people recognize is that “overworking” can actually be part of the “flight” response of the nervous system.  It’s related to past experiences and it can happen so quickly (and often) that we just believe it to be a normal behavior.

Unfortunately, if your “overworking” style is a flight response, no matter how hard you work you won’t be effective.  Why? Your prefrontal cortex or the “CEO” of your brain is considered to be “offline” when you’re in that type of response.  What this means is that your ability to strategize, problem solve, and act like a true leader, are greatly diminished.

In Coach Certification and Leadership Training, my clients learn to understand the difference between working hard and this very type of ineffective response - overworking.  It’s important for you as a leader to recognize it in you, and also understand the implications for those whom you’re leading.

Leadership skills keep you on the cutting edge

Lead the way as a leader and stay on the cutting edge of mental and emotional health - for yourself, your clients, and your team.  Mental and emotional health  affect all of us in one way or another. And when it affects one of us, it affects all of us in some capacity or another.
